I promise paying 25-75$ more with a well known name (hertz, enterprise, etc) will save you the stress, aggravation and money (and your child's life if you are renting a carseat). I felt unsafe with my daughter in the carseat that I ended up buying a new carseat and checked it into my flight upon departing. The carseat was so filthy that my daughter developed some sort of rash around her neck. ![]() ![]() They should not be giving out these carseats. The woman who was working the desk up front admitted to how old these car seats are. I added a carseat for my toddler and they gave me an old, dirty expired car seat. In our contract it states we get one full tank within the price we pay, however when I returned the car with more than half a tank left they surcharged me for not returning the car with a full tank. I called and asked about it and they promised it back but that was never refunded. I returned the car just the way it was rented and they took my security deposit. A rental that should have only costed us about 300$ cost almost $800. I don't understand how these thieves are still in business given all these horrible reviews. ![]() ![]() ![]() In our Capture One Pro review you will learn about another no less effective function which resembles Photoshop: the opportunity to create multilevel adjustments. The setting procedure is quite simple it’s enough to turn the circle to the appropriate side and the result won’t make you wait. Instead of a great variety of photo sliders, there are three available ways, with the help of which shadows, midtones and highlights are adjusted. 3 Ways to Adjust Shadows, Mid-Tones and Highlights Each slider has advanced settings, which one can find in the “Skin Tone” tab. The color editor has customary adjustments and familiar sliders to set various options including hue, smoothness, saturation, and lightness. ![]() ![]() Other useful tools are Clone and Heal, which perfectly handle spot removal. This is the special feature for you to set a color range or specific shades as well as skin tone with the help of a color box. Both of these are strong points of Lightroom Classic (but also aren’t available in the Lightroom CC version). We can say the same about multi-frame panoramas. When it comes to the current HDR with the usage of several images of the same scene, taken with a different exposure, Capture One doesn’t have such a tool. Their aim is not to create special effects. The High Dynamic Range section provides only two-color sliders for highlights and shadows. You can cancel the auto adjustment of any given parameter (exposure, white balance, etc.) by clicking the button one more time. The large A button above the sidebar buttons provides the suitable automatic adjustments for the current window. However, Capture One receives more details during initial image converting. Automatic Configuration OptionĬommonly I can get a more attractive final result using Lightroom Classic tools. The “Color Mask” feature allows users to make adjustment layers based on selected color zones for local modifications. However, I wish to have several classic Lightroom Classic tools in Capture One Pro 20 such as Vibrance and Dehaze. Moreover, clarity settings offer several models, where Natural, Punch, and Neutral are more efficient than standard mode, which, I suppose, only increases the sharpness of the picture. The software provides customizable histogram, HDR, exposure, white balance, clarity setup and much more. ![]() Picture editing and color correction in Capture One isn’t easy but very effective. In the second case, one part of the name is altered, while the rest remains constant. In the first case, the same sound/vowel was present at the beginning of the child’s name (the examples mentioned above of the female names starting with “As” would fall into this category). ![]() Two other popular naming conventions were alliteration and variation. Making female names using the Old Norse particle “As” (‘god’), like in Astrid, Asgerd, and Ashild was also a way for some Viking parents to try to endow their daughters with divine qualities. For instance, the name Hilda (‘figther’), inspired by one of Odin’s Valkyries, was a very popular choice for girls. However, adopting the name of other mythological characters, such as minor divinities or heroines, was also common. Vikings also used to name their daughters after goddesses, such as Hel (the goddess of the Norse underworld), Freya (the goddess of love and fertility), or Idun (the goddess of youth and spring), among others. Named After a Norse Goddess or Other Types of Mythological Characters In the case of girls, some examples of this tradition are names such as Dahlia (‘valley’), Revna (‘raven’), Kelda (‘fountain’), Gertrud (‘spear’), Randi (‘shield’), among others. Names Inspired by Natural Elements or Weaponsīeing pagans and warriors, it wasn’t uncommon for Vikings to look into nature and their arsenal when looking for inspiration for choosing their kids’ names. In some cases, ancestors’ common names could also be inherited. Due to this tradition, the same female names tended to remain within the same families for long periods of time. This also applied if the mother of the child died while giving birth. If a relative died while the child was still in the womb, this event very often decided the upcoming baby’s name. At the root of this tradition was the belief that part of a dead relative’s essence (or knowledge) was transmitted to the newborn along with her name. Named After a Dead Relativeįor the Vikings, who believed that ancestors should be venerated, naming their daughters after a close deceased relative (such as a grandmother) was a way to pay respects to the dead. ![]() In this article, we will provide some examples of how each of these naming conventions worked. It’s worth mentioning that Vikings didn’t have surnames as we understand them today.
![]() ![]() ![]() We are still not sure, but now we know more than we did before about what happened in the earthquake. If the shallow part of the fault just doesn’t slip in earthquakes, but instead creeps along steadily, then the risk of a large tsunami from this part of the fault is much lower. If it is, then the risk of a future large tsunami is high. Why didn’t it? The reason is that most of the slip on the interface between the plates happened only on the part of the interface that was still quite deep - the earthquake didn’t rupture to the seafloor or even close to it.īut we really need to know how close to the surface it got, and whether the shallower part of the fault that didn’t slip in this earthquake is capable of doing so in the future. One of the interesting features of this earthquake is that it did NOT generate a large tsunami. This research helps with assessing hazard and risk. How does this research help with assessing tsunami hazard risk? So, it helps to have a larger motion to measure when the noise level is high. That means it is hard to measure the acoustic range as precisely as we can measure the GPS part. The GNSS-acoustic position measurements of the seafloor’s motion are quite noisy because the speed of sound through the water is very sensitive to ocean temperature and varies a lot with time. That means a large signal for us to measure, which is always helpful. Large earthquakes are important to study because they produce the largest motions and cause the largest changes in stress within the Earth. The most important thing we learned is that the total movement at the GPS-acoustic site offshore was much larger than had been predicted by earlier models for the earthquake. Why is studying the Chignik, Alaska, earthquake important to earthquake research? This technique is called GPS-acoustic positioning, and by repeating the survey measurements before and after the earthquake, we can measure how much the seafloor moved, and use that to better determine how the fault moved. Radio signals from the GPS satellites will not travel through water, so to get any data we must combine the GPS positioning of a floating platform with acoustic, or sound wave, positioning of the same platform relative to an array of transponders, which pick up and emit signals on the seafloor. On land, we can set up Global Positioning Systems or Global Navigation Satellite Systems - GPS and GNSS, respectively - instruments and record the positions of the plates fairly easily, but the part of the fault that slipped in the earthquake is located pretty far away from land. To measure earthquakes underwater, researchers must combine data from satellites in the sky with signals from transponders on the ocean floor. The biggest challenge is that the fault comes to the surface on the ocean bottom far offshore, and there are kilometers of water in the way! We need to measure how the Earth was permanently moved by the earthquake, and we really need measurements that are made right above the part of the fault that slipped. What are the challenges with studying the Alaska-Aleutian fault? This research appeared recently in the journal Science Advances. ![]() Freymueller is an internationally recognized expert in geodesy, or the study of Earth’s size and shape, and serves as MSU’s Endowed Chair for Geology of the Solid Earth. Jeffrey Freymueller, a professor in the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University, is researching this earthquake to learn more about exactly where that slip occurred (and how much) to better understand how faults work and to help evaluate the risk of future earthquakes and tsunamis. Between 20, the two plates slipped along this fault, producing a series of earthquakes, including the Chignik, Alaska, earthquake on July 29, 2021, which registered an 8.2 in magnitude - the largest earthquake within U.S. Off the coast of Alaska, the Pacific plate thrusts underneath the North American plate creating enormous pressure at the Alaska-Aleutian fault. They got that right.Īnd it’s even better when you include even more unique characters, exposing friends and family to the dangers of this fictional world just to have fun.Įverything from characters or situations to the general theme of Death Road To Canada has a sense of parody to it, but the reality that these characters are living in remains the same. One time, while riding with a whole different party, the group found my avatar just roaming the streets, “making tons of noise, playing a portable game console at full blast”. The interesting part is that you can not only select your own character, but it will be introduced in the game as part of this fictional world. You can begin your story with a randomized character or choose to create your own character, selecting a bunch of visual options and your own traits, which will grant positive and negative buffs when dealing with certain situations, like using brute force or knowledge when trying to fix the car or being able to survive scavenging an entire place without help. This is what makes Death Road To Canada so special. But instead of purely relaying on sadness and tragedy, the game presents a lot of humor, bording the line of not taking itself seriously at all. The original pitch resonates a lot with The Oregon Trail, which is 100% correct, as all characters have their own morale, traits and skills, a lot of which are developed during their story with us. And then I heard a sound I would never forget…Ī bark, from a machine gun wielding dog who helped me to escape.ĭeath Road To Canada seemed like a different game for me at first: it introduces itself as a survival title, leading you and a bunch of peculiar characters throughout a zombie apocalypse until the end of the world. When it all seemed pointless, I saw a shadow on the wall that moved faster than the regular zombies. I grabbed my weapons and ran into a house nearby to protect myself from them. That was, until a horde of zombies started a siege. The car finally stopped moving and I was forced to proceed on foot. I tried to look for other survivors, a place to stay the night. My friends had died searching for supplies in an abandoned library. ![]() We could see our destination in the horizon, but it was the journey ahead that scared me. ![]() ![]() Older threads suggest that processing overheads to decompress compressed files (including most FLAC formats) resulted in audible differences possibly due to electrical noise incurred by the decompression process itself.Īs you say, I could just download one format and freely use software to convert to another - they ought to be the same but I’ve never checked the audio only bit by bit (once decompressed if needed).Īlso, you have to wonder if say a hi-res download has the same provenance as the CD quality version you could also download - music companies could potentially provide a different CD quality version which is not derived from the hi-res master. In the past with older streamers I think WAV or FLAC were preferred for NAS streaming (or NAS transcoding to WAV on the fly), though I can’t recall if the older streamers could handle ALAC natively anyway. Cobalt is also available as briquets, granules (99.5% cobalt), rondelles, powder (99.995% cobalt or 99.8% cobalt, 99.9% cobalt, 0.25–2 mm) ( Sax & Lewis, 1987 American Chemical Society, 1988 Aldrich Chemical Co., 1990).Ĭobalt alloys can be categorized into six broad types: superalloys (high-temperature alloys), magnetic alloys, hard-metal alloys, high-strength steels, electrodeposited alloys and alloys with special properties ( Donaldson, 1986).Įlements used in cobalt alloys are classified in terms of their effect on the transition from the cubic to the hexagonal form. Electrolytic coarse powder has a mean particle size of 4–10 μm ( Cobalt Development Institute, 1989). The ‘fine’, ‘extrafine’ and ‘superfine’ cobalt powders manufactured from the cathodes have a submicrometre mean particle size and contain both allotropic crystal forms in varying proportions for different applications. The cathodes measure 10–25 mm and weigh 20–50 g, with a purity greater than 99.5%. The Co 2+ ⇆ Co 3+ interconversion is important in many applications of cobalt compounds, including their use as catalysts and as paint driers and in the reactions of vitamin B 12 ( National Research Council, 1977 Donaldson, 1986 Donaldson et al., 1986a, b).Ĭobalt metal is available for industrial use as ‘broken’ or ‘cut’ cathodes or electrolytic coarse powder. In contrast, in an alkaline solution containing ammonium hydroxide or cyanide, Co 2+ is readily oxidized by air or hydrogen peroxide to the more stable Co 3+ complex. In acid solution, in the absence of such complexing ligands, Co 2+ is the stable form and Co 3+ is so unstable that it is reduced rapidly and spontaneously to Co 2+, oxidizing water to molecular oxygen. These electron-donor ligands strongly stabilize Co 3+ in solution, usually forming octahedral complexes, many of which can be isolated as stable salts. A few simple salts of cobalt in its + 3 oxidation state have been used commercially (e.g., Co 2O 3), and many Co(III) complexes with ligands such as NH 3, CN −, NO 2−, ethylene-diaminetetraacetic acid, phthalocyanines and azo dyes have been studied extensively. With the exception of the mixed oxide (Co 3O 4), the major commercial cobalt chemicals are all compounds of cobalt in its stable + 2 oxidation state. Single crystals show marked magnetic anisotropy up to about 250☌ ( Donaldson, 1986). The cubic form is magnetically anisotropic up to about 1000☌ and becomes paramagnetic at 1121 ☌. It forms a mixed oxide-sulfide scale in air containing sulfur dioxide ( Donaldson et al., 1986a).Ĭobalt also has magnetic properties. Cobalt forms a protective layer of sulfide scale when reacted with sulfur at temperatures below 877☌ or in an atmosphere of hydrogen sulfide. Cobalt metal does not combine directly with hydrogen or nitrogen but combines with sulfur, phosphorus and carbon when heated. Cobalt is stable to atmospheric oxygen, but when it is heated it is oxidized to the mixed oxide, Co(II,III) oxide (CO 3O 4) at temperatures above 900 ☌, Co(II) oxide (CoO) is the end-product. The main oxidation states of cobalt are Co(2 +) and Co(3 +). The free energy change is low, however, so that transformation from the face-centred cubic back to the hexagonal close-packed form is slow and may be inhibited by physical form (e.g., grain size or presence of other metals) ( Donaldson, 1986). The hexagonal close-packed form is more stable at temperatures below 417☌, and the face-centred cubic form at higher temperatures (from 417☌ to the melting-point Considine, 1974). ![]() ![]() Bergman established cobalt as an element ( Donaldson, 1986).Ĭobalt exists in two allotropic forms.
